Today we’re taking a look at probably the most neglected of the 50 states. Alaska stretches from the Aleutian Islands to the eastern hemisphere making it the largest state in the USA it covers an area of 660 3268 square miles and has a population of about seven hundred and thirty-eight thousand four hundred thirty-two people for most people the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about Alaska is the unending sea of ice polar bears and the Alaskan wilderness.

a lot of Alaska cannot be accessed by vehicle and surprisingly this includes the capital city of Juneau it’s only accessible by boat or plane most of the commuters are bush planes and snow machines the highways that are   available only have two lanes because of this there is a traffic law that requires drivers to pull over if there are at least five other vehicles behind you this is done to avoid traffic backups by allowing faster vehicles to pass because of this situation one out of fifty eight people in Alaska is a licensed pilot a pizza company called Airport pizza even delivers to hungry customers in the remotest of areas for free

because of its bone-chilling weather and large uninhabitable glacier covered landscape most people automatically assume that Alaska is the least populated state in the USA interestingly there are actually three other states that have a lower population than Alaska they are North Dakota Wyoming and Vermont however Alaska is still the least densely populated state if the population density was transferred to New York there would be  pproximately 28 people in Manhattan imagine that according to the census in 2010 the population has only increased by 13% in the previous 10 years

13 Robert Gilliam was the richest man in Alaska

Robert Gilliam was the founder of McKinley Capital Management he’s estimated to be worth 700 million dollars making him one of the wealthiest men in the u.s. he’s an alumnus of Wharton School of Business where he earned his Bachelor of Science in economics his career began in Foster & Marshall we held the position of vice president he later moved on to public service under the Alaskan government

Pearl Harbor was not the only US location that was attacked during World War two about 17 years before Alaska became a US state the Alaskan islands of Attu and Kiska were taken over by the Japanese between June 6 and 7 1942 they controlled the islands for months during which they enslaved the locals soldiers were later sent to free the locals unfortunately they were ill-equipped to deal with the cold Alaskan climate as a result it took longer than necessary to subdue the enemy it took 15 days 549 American lives and over 2,600 Japanese soldier fatalities before they finally took over the island much of the battlefield and Kiska is still thought to be preserved under the ice it is however considered unsafe because there are likely undetonated land mines  in the area

in May of 2007 the chief executive and owner of Beco Corp in the largest oil field pled guilty to corruption charges they had tried to bribe Alaskan legislators in an attempt to secure favorable treatment they admitted to paying over $400,000 to the lawmakers it was also determined they had made several illegal payments in the name of consulting fees the findings from the criminal case yielded 67 banker boxes they were seized but authorities haven’t been able to agree on what to do with the material since the case ended some have demanded that the documents be made public however most of the officials potentially mentioned in the documents have since then left office or are now deceased

10 there is controversy over Alaskan hunting regulations

natives of Alaska have been hunting game for as long as the area has been inhabited but in the recent past there’s been friction between locals and conservationists over what should be hunted and the methods they should use to hunt some of the most hunted animals up there are bears and wolves the Trump administration is seeking to repeal all regulations that have been imposed on the locals by Washington this is seen by some as a move that shows respect for Alaskan independence as a state while conservationists may argue that control is important there are people that feed their families from the Hunts methods of hunting such as use of bacon motor boats and spotlights are widely considered inhumane

06 Alaska is 40% water the total number of lakes

in Alaska is estimated to be around 3 million yes you heard that right three million lakes the number of rivers is somewhere around 12,000 the largest lake Lake Iliamna is 1115 square miles about the size of Connecticut most of the streams are frozen for close to half of the year every year the streams begin to saw between April and May and the flow for most of the rivers is influenced by glaciers which cover five percent of the state the Yukon River is the longest river in Alaska covering over 1280 miles

for a long time English was the official state language of Alaska despite there being 20 other native languages given the low population in the area a lot of the natives originally migrated into the area from Siberia in the early 18th century Russians then began to trade with him and later forced them into slavery Americans only began to interact with Alaskan Natives during the gold rush in 1896 this is why many of the native languages have survived to date.

the Russians were convinced that Alaska was nothing but a vast wasteland they previously used it primarily for the fur trade and missionary work and the Russians felt that the territory would be easily seized by the United Kingdom in case of  war the Treaty for America to buy Alaska from Russia was agreed upon on March 30th 1867 the amount paid translated to two cents per acre 23 years later gold was discovered in Alaska making it possibly the biggest real estate ripoff of the century and today Alaska is believed to hold on to the last remaining untouched oil reserves in the world
